In that part of Sardinia that winds between Trexenta, Campidano and Gennargentu runs a timeless train, whose passage is greeted by little yellow dots waving a green and red paddle, the barrier-watchers. A job that has been inherited in the female line for generations. They block traffic as the train passes. At each crossing manned by a lady in a fluorescent vest, the engineer pulls a rope and raises his arm in greeting.
Around them the landscape alternates between yellow fields and dry stone walls, cactus-stained plains, forests and narrow mountain gorges.
