Maciste — the original one, the character who first appeared in Giovanni Pastrone’s Cabiria (1914) — steps out of the screen, summoned by film critic and historian Steve Della Casa. He wants to discover who he truly is and what his legacy has been.

Della Casa guides him in search of his other self: Bartolomeo Pagano, the dockworker from the port of Genoa whose life was forever transformed by his encounter with director Giovanni Pastrone.
