Late summer of the year 37 BC. Civil war between Octavian and Mark Antony rages across the Mediterranean. In the Balkans, an isolated province not yet fully conquered by Roman forces, the Illyrian tribes live in a state between war and peace. After a vicious attack on his tribe, Volsus, a young Liburnian shepherd, joins the legion. The legionnaires’ task is to ensure delivery of the tribute money that the occupied but not completely conquered tribes of Dalmatians, Iapodes, and Bivians must pay to the Roman state. Many tribes have ongoing bloody conflicts among themselves. The tribute delivery is about to happen at an outpost located deep in the mountains of Illyricum but not everything will go as planned.
